Pink Flamingos - John Waters (1972)

Jarmusch’s First Feature

This film was made on next to no budget by a bunch of rag tag film makers.  The crew and cast comprised mostly of friends.  While this is not one of Jarmusch’s highly acclaimed films the stories of how it was made and the struggles to produce his first work make this an important piece of film history.

For instance this scene was shot in very limited circumstances with no permit and a borrowed car from a fan which was crashed shortly after this scene was shot.

Permanent Vacation - Jim Jarmusch (1980)

The Beat Generation & Howl

“Howl” was written as a performance piece and later published by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti ofCity Lights Books. Upon its release, Ferlinghetti and the bookstore’s manager, Shigeyoshi Murao, were charged with disseminating obscene literature, and both were arrested. On October 3, 1957, JudgeClayton W. Horn ruled that the poem was not obscene, and “Howl” went on to become the most popular poem of the Beat Generation.[1] (from Wikipedia)
